Lets beat a dead horse. By now a good portion of the civilized world has heard about the Schapelle Corby case. For those living next door to Osamas cave here is a quick review.
In October ’04 Corby left her native Australia for a 10 day vacation in Bali, Indonesia. Upon her arrival marjuana was discovered in one of her bags. She was arrested and last week sentenced to 15 years in jail. A light sentence considering she could have received life.
The reason for whipping this dead equine is I discovered her supporters have started a blog, Innocent Without Doubt, blares it’s top banner. First thing I noticed are none of the entries allow comments. Not entirely unheard of but not very “blog like” to my way of thinking and wonder why they want produce their own little echo chamber vice invite dialog. If the facts are on their side “without doubt” what are they afraid of? Frankly I can’t read their minds and offer the possibility they may not want to spend time moderating comments.
The second thing I noted, and the primary reason for this post, is this entry, Corby ignites US TV debate, that cites this article from The Age. Help me out here, I’ve been out of country so long I have no memory of the shows name but do remember the Asian hottie that was on it at one time. And Barbara Walters who was cast in the roll of elder journalism spokesmen.
The Corby supporters quoted Walters in an effort to paint the Indonesian laws as cruel and unusual.
(Barbara)Walters, the 71-year-old matriarch of American news, said she spoke with a US drug enforcement officer about the case.
The officer told her if Corby smuggled that amount of marijuana into the US she would have only faced a minor charge.
Walters also said if the US was going to protest incidents in other countries, such as the Corby sentence in Indonesia, the US should not be so sensitive when other countries protest against incidents involving the US, such as the detention of terror suspects at Guantanamo Bay.
“So in that sense, if we are going to call on the international community, we are going to have to practice what we preach,” Walters said.
To which the author of the post exclaimed, “She’s still got it!” in refering to Walters.
Keep in mind Corby carried in 4.7 kilos of pot, it wasn’t a few joints between friends. So my question is, just what has Walters got? Did she really find a drug enforcement officer that stated bringing in nearly 10 pounds of pot into the US was a minor offense? (maybe not worth 15 years but a serious felony none the less) Or did she talk to a night janitor playing the role. Or is the over ripe Walters a lying sack of botox and silicone?
You make the call.
