Media sources are reporting, the WaPo among them, an Israeli bomb destroyed a U.N. observer post on the border in southern Lebanon, killing two peacekeepers and leaving two others feared dead.
As reports of the attack emerged, Kofi Annan rushed out of a hotel in Rome (wearing his “jumping shoes” presumably) following a dinner with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Saniora.
“I am shocked and deeply distressed by the apparently deliberate targeting by Israeli Defence Forces of a U.N. Observer post in southern Lebanon,” Annan said in the statement.
“I call on the goverment of Israel to conduct a full investigation into this very disturbing incident and demand that any further attack on U.N. positions and personnel must stop,” Annan said in the statement.
By what contorted stretch of imagination has Kofi used coming to the conclusion the attack was deliberate? What sources on the ground did he use to make that ludicrous assertion?
Taking it further, what does he believe Israel would gain by such an attack? He must have some basis to “logically” conclude it was in their best interests and to deliberately target an UNIFIL outpost that has been in place for 28 years.
Wrong, Kofi is being Kofi. Posturing before the world’s press, expressing breathless self-rightous indignation over what is obviously a tragic accident.
I would take Kofi and the U.N. more seriously if they reigned in the explosive rhetoric and spent less effort legitimizing the terrorists. I’ll continue my normal respiration rate while I wait.
And this needs to be said, again: STFU Kofi.
