The WaPo, via the San Francisco Chronicle, does it’s “level” best to attach its self to the current Walter Reed Hospital debacle by attempting to add fuel to the fire.
Here’s the lede: NATO’s U.S. forces in Kosovo may lose benefits of combat status
Top Defense Department officials are considering a proposal to downgrade the combat status of U.S. forces participating in the NATO peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, a decision that could cause the 1,500 U.S. soldiers currently deployed there to lose hundreds or even thousands of dollars each month in tax benefits and combat pay.
Such a decision, expected within the next month, would indicate that Pentagon officials do not believe Kosovo is still a combat zone, despite rising tensions in the Balkans over Kosovo’s continuing bid for independence and frequent U.S. missions that involve dangerous interdictions of smuggling rings, raids on armed extremist groups, and encounters with improvised bombs.
Now I don’t mean to imply this isn’t a legit and timely story, it is.
However, consider the two sources. The WaPo and SF Chronicle aren’t exactly the last bastions of all that’s right and good when it comes to war reporting. Both these Flounder Wrappers have been shouting QUAGMIRE in Iraq and Afghanistan articles since… forever.
There’s one question that comes to mind and is required to honestly assess the Pentagons move.
Where are the mass of stories by these two papers that detail “dangerous interdictions of smuggling rings, raids on armed extremist groups, and encounters with improvised bombs” as alleged?
We can only assume the Pentagon is correct in pulling Imminent Danger Pay from troops serving in Kosovo. The press has been too busy with “if it bleeds it ledes” stories out of Iraq to be bothered with the real QUAGMIRE in Kosovo.
Heaven forbid if they shine a light on 8 years of United Nations foul-ups in Kosovo. A place that still has no functioning government after 8 YEARS of U.N. control!
“The U.S. mission that began in 1999 now receives little attention amid the worsening wars in Iraq and Afghanistan,” claims the WaPo.
Yea no shit Sherlock!
