“Although initially heralded as a breakthrough green fuel technology, biofuel has been put under the spotlight in the last couple of years as potentially destructive due to its production methods in certain regions. Critics argue that a large-scale demand for biofuel is leading to indiscriminate deforestation, something that existing regulations on the issue do not guard against.”
“There were demonstrations in London yesterday and groups across the UK also protested against the introduction of mandatory biofuel blending. Outside Downing Street speakers from Friends of the Earth, Global Forest Coalition, GM Freeze, Campaign against Climate Change and Biofuelwatch condemned the government’s decision to go ahead with it’s biofuel policy against overwhelming evidence of catastrophic impacts on climate, communities, biodiversity and food security.”
“… This ignores repeated warnings from the UN’s World Food Programme. On February 26th, it advised that due to rising food prices, it is short of $0.5bn just to meet existing food aid deliveries. Its advisers estimate that the rush to biofuels is 30 per cent of the cause of these rising food prices.”
“When we make biofuels from agricultural products not used for food, that is fine. But when they are made from food products, this poses a major moral problem,” Strauss-Kahn told Europe 1 radio station on Friday.
Asked if he would support a possible moratarium on biofuels, Strauss-Kahn said: “When they use foodstuffs.”
“Following mounting pressure from environmental lobby groups and growing evidence that biofuels could be more environmentally damaging than beneficial, the EU appears to be making a U-turn on policy regarding the alternative fuel.”
“The scientists are calling on the EU to suspend the target to used 10% of biofuels in petrol by 2020.
Ms Tuffy wants the minister for environment, heritage and local government, John Gormley, and energy minister Eamon Ryan, to support the cause. Friends of the Earth Ireland has expressed growing concerns about the negative impacts of biofuel production.”
